The Rise of Modern Logic: From Leibniz to Frege

Description: With the publication of the present volume, the Handbook of the History of Logic turns its attention to the rise of modern logic. The period covered is 1685-1900, with this volume carving out the territory from Leibniz to Frege. What is striking about this period is the earliness and persistence of what could be called 'the mathematical turn in logic'. Virtually every working logic...

Semantic Minimalism and the Frege Point 1

Speech act theory is one of the more lasting products of the linguistic movement in philosophy of the mid-Twentieth century. Within philosophy itself the movement’s products did not in general prove so durable. Particularly striking in this respect is the perceived fate of what was one of the most characteristic applications of the linguistic turn in philosophy, namely the view that many tradit...

which is extremely strange the first time one encounters it. After all, why not just write V (x, y) = ye1 − xe2 where e1 = (1, 0), e2 = (0, 1)? What do partial derivatives have to do with anything? (That was the question I asked.) However, if viewed in the right way, it is not so strange. For if a vector field V is given, then one natural thing that can be done with it is to differentiate a sca...

Frege on Identity

Frege’s most celebrated paper “On Sense and Reference” begins with a puzzle. The sentences “a=a” and “a=b” superficially strike the reader as being different kinds of claims. Among other things, “a=a” seems to be trivially true, even self-evident. On the other hand, “a=b” is an informative sentence. It is of a kind important to many episodes in the history of science. Deeper reflection, however...

Frege on Identity Statements

ion is no patch, for the notion of numerical equivalence onto which it is to converge must presuppose a notion of number such that distinct numbers, given by distinct numerical symbols, can be the same number. This is to be the accomplishment of abstraction, by which, Frege says, “things are supposed to become identical by being equated.” But how can abstraction, a “capability of the human mind...
